Chemical Properties - Oxidation
|
Oxidation means that a substance loses electrons during a chemical reaction, oftentimes during reactions with oxygen.
Have you ever wondered why the Statue of Liberty, which is made of copper, is greenish-colored instead of copper-colored? Its greenish color is caused by the oxidation of copper with various chemicals.
Click on the "Oxidation of a Copper Penny" resource to watch a video of copper undergoing an oxidation reaction. At the end of the reaction, the copper penny is completely gone, leaving behind a greenish-colored solution.
